Building the LEGO Greenhouse: My Journey with New Relic

When New Relic approached me with a unique project for Earth Day, I knew I was in for an exciting challenge. They wanted a custom LEGO greenhouse that would symbolize their commitment to cultivating data while also celebrating sustainability. Designing and building this piece was an incredible experience that combined creativity, technical problem-solving, and a deep dive into LEGO’s endless possibilities.

New Relic - Greenhouse Lego Project - Tyler Clites

Let me take you behind the scenes of how I brought this project to life. I’ll share the challenges I faced, and the techniques I used to create a masterpiece that captured New Relic’s vision.

Bringing New Relic’s Vision to Life

Understanding the Client’s Needs

New Relic, a leader in observability software, had a clear idea of what they wanted. They wanted a glass greenhouse model brimming with vibrant greenery to align with their Earth Day campaign. The build needed to be more than just eye-catching. It had to reflect their brand values and serve as a metaphor for how they innovatively “cultivate data.”

Key Requirements

  • A transparent structure: A nod to clarity and openness.
  • Lush plant life: Representing growth and vibrancy.
  • An Earth Day theme: To tie it all together with purpose.

I couldn’t wait to get started, but I knew this would push my skills as a builder.

Overcoming the Challenges

Designing a Glass Building

The biggest challenge was creating a realistic glass structure using LEGO bricks. Although transparent pieces are tricky to work with, I was determined to create a design that looked clean and elegant.

  • Walls: I formed the walls using large transparent window elements in various sizes, ensuring they fit seamlessly together.
  • Roof: The roof was especially tricky. I solved this by building a 90-degree angled wall of transparent bricks that could be placed on top of the structure, creating a smooth, modern look.

Adding Vibrancy with Greenery

New Relic wanted the greenhouse to feel alive, so I incorporated a variety of LEGO plant and flower elements. From tall trees to tiny shrubs, I carefully arranged each piece to create a lush, vibrant environment both inside and outside the greenhouse.

Working Within a Tight Timeline

The project had to be completed quickly. Designing the greenhouse took me about 18 hours, and packaging all the kits for delivery took another 30 hours. However, every second was worth it when I saw the final result.

The Materials That Brought It All Together

LEGO Pieces Used

For this project, I relied on a mix of specialized and standard LEGO pieces:

  • Transparent window and door elements: For the walls and roof.
  • Plant and flower elements: To bring the greenhouse to life.
  • Structural bricks: To build the base and reinforce stability.

While I didn’t count every single brick, the project used hundreds of individual pieces, each carefully selected for its role in the design.

Step-by-Step: How I Built the Greenhouse

  1. Conceptualizing the Design
I started with a few sketches, experimenting with proportions and layouts until I landed on a design that felt right.
  2. Selecting Materials
Once the design was finalized, I chose the best LEGO elements to bring the concept to life, focusing on transparency and greenery.
  3. Building the Base
The foundation came first, providing a sturdy platform for the walls and roof.
  4. Constructing the Walls
The transparent walls were built piece by piece, ensuring alignment and symmetry throughout the structure.
  5. Creating the Roof
The angled roof was the most challenging part, but it ended up being one of my favorite features of the build.
  6. Adding Greenery
I carefully arranged trees, shrubs, and flowers throughout the model to give the greenhouse a lush appearance.
  7. Packaging the Kits
After completing the build, I assembled and packaged each kit with care, ready for New Relic to share with their team.

The Final Result

When the greenhouse was finished, I couldn’t have been happier with how it turned out. The combination of transparent walls, innovative roofing, and vibrant greenery made it one of the most unique and rewarding projects I’ve worked on. New Relic was thrilled, and I was proud to have brought their vision to life.
