How do you translate a company’s brand identity into LEGO form? What challenges arise when creating a custom LEGO kit at scale? And how can businesses use LEGO as a powerful engagement tool?
Specializing in designing custom LEGO kits, sculptures, and interactive LEGO experiences for businesses and collectors, Small Data SF approached me with a request to turn their conference logo into a LEGO giveaway for attendees, I knew this would be an exciting challenge.

This project pushed my design skills to new limits. In this article, I’ll walk you through the entire process—from concept to completion—and explain why custom LEGO creations are a game-changer for corporate events.
Bringing the Small Data SF Logo to Life
Small Data SF 2024, a conference focused on AI and small data strategies, was held in San Francisco on September 23-24, 2024. The event brought together some of the brightest minds in the industry, and the organizers wanted to create something special for attendees—a custom LEGO kit that embodied the event’s identity.

Their request? A LEGO replica of the conference logo that attendees could build and take home.
At first glance, this seemed simple. But as any LEGO designer knows, shrinking a detailed logo into a small, buildable model comes with unique challenges.
The Challenges of Designing a Custom LEGO Kit
Designing a LEGO version of a corporate logo is not just about matching colors and shapes—it’s about ensuring the final build captures the brand’s essence while remaining structurally sound and easy to assemble.
Key Challenges I Faced:
- Size Constraints – The model had to be compact but detailed enough to be recognizable.
- Color Gradient – The Small Data SF logo features a gradient effect, requiring a mix of coral, pink, and orange LEGO tiles.
- Typography – The “DADA” lettering had to be built with curved tiles and wedge plates, while “Small SF” required a vinyl transfer sticker.
- Mass Production – With 500 kits to produce, sourcing the right parts in bulk was a logistical challenge.
Each of these hurdles required careful problem-solving and creative brick selection.
The Process: From Digital Model to Physical Kits
Step 1: Designing the Model
I started by digitally designing the LEGO kit using professional LEGO CAD software. The goal was to accurately capture the logo’s shape, typography, and color gradient while keeping the piece count manageable.
The final design consisted of 58 LEGO pieces, carefully chosen to balance aesthetics and buildability.
Step 2: Sourcing the Pieces
Finding LEGO tiles in coral, pink, and orange was one of the trickiest parts. LEGO doesn’t always produce certain colors in abundance, so I had to source pieces from multiple suppliers to get enough for all 500 kits.
Here’s a breakdown of the essential pieces:
Brick Type | Quantity per Kit | Function |
Coral, pink, orange tiles | Multiple | Create the gradient effect |
Curved tiles & wedge plates | Multiple | Form the “DADA” typography |
Vinyl transfer stickers | 1 | Apply the “Small SF” text |
Step 3: Assembling and Packaging
Once the pieces arrived, I assembled prototypes to ensure the model looked perfect and was easy for attendees to build. I then prepared the 500 kits, packaging each one neatly to be distributed at the event.
Why Custom LEGO Kits Are Perfect for Corporate Events
Custom LEGO kits are a highly effective engagement tool for companies looking to make an impact at conferences, trade shows, or corporate events.
Why LEGO Works for Business Events:
✔ Memorable & Unique – LEGO kits are interactive and collectible, unlike standard promotional items.
✔ Brand Reinforcement – A custom LEGO model ensures your brand stays on top of mind long after the event.
✔ Shareable Content – Attendees love sharing unique gifts on social media, amplifying brand visibility.
✔ Eco-Friendly Alternative – Unlike disposable giveaways, LEGO kits are kept and displayed, reducing waste.
Small Data SF saw the value in a LEGO kit as a memorable takeaway for attendees, and I’ve worked with other businesses to create similar impact-driven LEGO experiences.
